Sediments of Time

Through the consistent development of a monochrome pictorial space, the artist explores the potential of color as a mental and emotional field of experience. Dominated by a highly intense, warm yellow, the work unfolds as a nearly boundless color space in which time, memory, and emotion are deposited layer by layer, rendered visible once more through subtle gestures and complex surface structures.

Instead of resorting to representational narratives, the composition emerges from superimposed color fields, flowing traces, and horizontally extended rhythms. This creates a visual space between order and chance. The vibrant yellow carries a potent emotional energy, while subtle gray-blue and gray-green tones simultaneously lend the work restraint, tranquility, and contemplative depth.

In this work, the artist connects the East Asian concept of Qi Yun — spiritual resonance and vitality — with the material expressiveness of Western abstract painting. Color no longer serves to depict an external reality, but instead becomes a vehicle for emotion, temporality, and personal experience. Rather than relying on figurative narration, the artist develops a visual language of temporal sedimentation. Intersecting marks and overlapping layers record a process of building, revising, and covering, as if time itself had inscribed its presence upon the canvas. The faint appearances of blue, pink, yellow, and red do not represent external reality; instead, they function as carriers of perception, emotion, and memory as they move through the passage of time.

The work constructs a field of tension and vitality through saturated, profound shades of red. Layered color, flowing traces, and sediment-like textures intertwine to create a visual space in which intensity and restraint exist in delicate balance. Red is not employed merely as an emotional expression, but as a manifestation of life force, passion, and the enduring capacity for growth.

The artist integrates the Eastern aesthetic concept of Qi Yun—spiritual resonance and living energy—into the language of contemporary abstract painting. Vertical flows evoke the movement of breath and the circulation of energy, while horizontal accumulations establish a sense of inner order and stability. Color no longer serves to represent external reality; instead, it becomes a direct carrier of consciousness, experience, and emotional energy.
